Holiday Charity Blogs Series: Best Buddies

Introduced to Best Buddies by my freshman Resident Advisor (RA), my life took a positive turn from the first day of college. The friendly atmosphere of the club’s meetings made me excited to join an organization committed to fostering worldwide volunteer initiatives for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Best Buddies’ programs, spanning middle schools, high schools, and universities, aim to enhance the abilities of individuals with IDD by fostering meaningful friendships, securing successful employment, promoting independent living, and improving public speaking, self-advocacy, and communication skills to ensure inclusivity and value in society.

During my three years on the executive board of the San Diego State University (SDSU) Best Buddies Chapter, I had the opportunity to contribute to improving the organization’s experience for both SDSU students and buddies. One event that held a special place in my heart was our Spread the Word Day, focusing on ending the ‘r’ word.

As Vice President, I aimed to make it more than just a day. We organized a B3 Coffee popup, providing our buddies with the chance to run a coffee stand in the middle of campus – a fun way to develop communication and money skills. Another day was dedicated to adaptive athletics, giving our buddies a unique opportunity to engage in sports with their peers, which is not too common for individuals with IDD. The big campaign day took over the campus, asking everyone to sign in solidarity against the ‘r’ word. The week concluded with a talent show where our buddies showcased everything from tap dancing to conducting skills. Watch a recap of the week here.

The incredible individuals within Best Buddies never cease to amaze me. After graduating in 2020, my former RA became the Residential Manager at Best Buddies Living in Washington DC, overseeing daily activities for residents with IDD and contributing to the improvement of both her residence as well as future locations. This dedication earned her a well-deserved promotion to Deputy Director. Meanwhile, the current Development Director, after a successful term as the 2022-2023 President of SDSU Best Buddies, was nominated as a Champion of the Year candidate by Best Buddies. Collaborating with her buddy, she passionately spread the mission of Best Buddies over a successful 10-week campaign that collectively raised $138,928 for Best Buddies San Diego. These individuals exemplify the passion within Best Buddies to make the world more inclusive for all individuals with IDD.

I am so grateful for the organization, its purpose, and the inspiring people I’ve encountered. I encourage you to spread inclusion within your community in any way possible. #ChoosetoInclude.
